Westlake Golf Club

December 2024 Newsletter

2024… well that year certainly flew by. But for the Hout Bay Golf Club it was a year where the club in its 103rd year, introduced social media!!!

The club has a website : www.houtbaygolfclub.co.za : and for this we thank Ale Bonora for all his efforts in introducing this incredibly impressive website.

We also now have an e-mail address: houtbaygolfclub@gmail.com : and a WhatsApp Group both initiated by Angelo Campbell and John Philander who also took on the mantle of arranging our monthly outings….many thanks to the two of you.

And added to this is the fact that we can now EFT our green fees and not have to travel to the bank for the transfer! Thanks Mark Douglas and Wayne Maggott for looking after the finances. Wayne’s spreadsheet of the finances and individual outings was really impressive.

Our thanks to all the golf clubs who hosted us during 2024 – the co-operation is very well received.

The Tramway weekend at Westlake was an incredible success… thanks to all who participated. There was no doubt something in the water on the Friday as the amount raised in the auction was streets ahead of previous years as can be seen below:

2011 – R 8400, 2012 – R 16050, 2013 – R13265, 2014 – R11800, 2015 – R13150, 2016 – R 18650, 2017 – R13140, 2018 – R16450, 2019 – /, 2020 – R13000, 2021 – R 14600, 2022- R 23000, 2023 – R17200…….AND 2024 – R32240!

and then onto the golf on Sunday with a little trepidation about the windy conditions that could prevail. Well not too much to worry about there as there were mild gusts but nothing compared to what it could have been…

52 golfers teed off just after midday on Sunday with 35 qualifying for the Tramway Cup having attended the Friday dinner… and it was Graham Bradshaw who claimed the honour of winning the prestigious trophy with a net score 68 shots ( 83 less his handicap of 15 ). In second place was Bruce Isdale whose net score of 71 ( 89 – 18 ) was counted in after Jos Hurn’s return of 71 ( 92 – 21 ). What was incredible was the number of players who returned net scores in the low 70’s. Apart from those mentioned above:

  • Neil Isdale 68 ( 86 – 18 ) I’m sure you’ll attend next year’s dinner
  • Gareth Poggenpoel 72 ( 86 – 14 )
  • Scott Campbell 72 ( 87 – 15 )
  • Brad Ball 72 ( 88 – 16 )
  • Peter Harris 72 ( 87 – 15 )
  • Hugh Crichton-Stuart 73 ( 82 – 9 )
  • Dax Bailey 73 ( 97 – 24 )
  • Devon Thomson 74 ( 100 – 26 )
  • John Philander 74 ( 101 – 27 )
  • Trevor Quelch 74 ( 89 – 15 )
  • Trevor Quirk 74 ( 99 – 25 )
  • Mark Douglas 74 ( 104 – 30 )
  • Searle Fortune 74 ( 106 – 32 )
  • Craig Cerff 75 ( 86 – 11 )
  • Chris Boyes 75 ( 88 – 13 )

  • Nathier Fortune 75 ( 88 – 13 )
  • Matt Duddy 75 ( 96 – 21 )
  • Jan-Hugo Roothman 75 ( 108 – 33 )

Hugh Crichton-Stuart won the Presidents Cup (Best Gross) with a score of 82, Barry Daniels won the Mompara Cup (and he asked not to mention his score) and John Philander won both Nearest the Pins on the 3rd and 17th holes respectively.
